Day 1: Today was my first day at Collingwood Community Policing. First I was introduced to the staff and another co-op student. I got my contract signed and was given a safety orientation. Once the safety orientation was he told Aman, another co-op student from Panorama and me to fill bags with gloves and garbage bags for the annual garbage pickup that schools in Vancouver participate in. We stapled a sheet with the schools name and how many gloves/bags it had. It was break time once we finished. Our break is 45 minutes long. After our break we got to go in the Cop Car. In the Car was a computer for many uses: One use was to track down stolen cars. All you need is the license plate number and you could find who owns the car, if its stolen, or how many tickets you have got. After came garbage duty. We sorted about 400 bottles/cans which took some time. It smelled a horrible. The cans/bottles are used for fund raising because Collingwood Community Policing is a non-profiting organizing because they give back to the community. We got off one hour early today because we had finished everything. Not bad for a first day.
Day 2: Today I first started off just hanging around not doing much. Eventually our supervisor Norm told us to do audits. Which is checking to see if cars are safe from being broken into. We see if it has a steering wheel lock if it has any cash or valuables in sight and if the car is locked. We did this for about an hour and a half. Once we came back everybody had left except Aman, Jeff and me. Aman and me worked on a poster for a bike safety fair for an hour. After we finished we were pretty much bored. We just sat around because Norm had gone somewhere. So we waited and he finally came back. He told us to go back outside and use the palm pilots to see if any cars had been stolen. All you do is type in the license plate number of a car and it will beep if its not stolen and make a different sound if its stolen. We walked around and didn't find any cars stolen. We checked at least 50 cars. Once we got back we were basically done our job. We just watched T.V. for about 15-20 minutes and then he said we could go home. Today was a pretty boring day. A lot of walking involved.
Day 3: Today as soon as i got to the Collingwood policing center Mr. Tong paid a visit. He only stayed there for about 15 minutes. We delivered some clothes and food to the neighborhood house which only took about 10 min. After we did speed watching for about 3 hours. Speed watching is when you check the speed of the other cars. once we set up everything we went back in the van. I had to record all the cars speeds for 25 min. then Aman took over and we kept switching for about 2 hours. Cars were going 70km/h when the maximum was 50km/h. Not very many cars were going 50km/h, most were going under but some were in the 60's. Once we finished we came back at around 1:15. We ate a snack and went on our break. Our lunch lasted 1 hour. There was not much work left so Chris let us go home at 3:00. Today was an OK day for me.
Day 4: I finished my work experience at Collingwood Policing Center. I had a great time working with all of the employees. I wouldn't mind coming back any time. I liked helping out the community by checking if the cars were safe. Every time we would write audits someone would come up to us and ask us if it was a ticket. We had to explain that it is to see if your car is safe from robbers. Everybody always were making jokes especially today. One person would say something and everybody would just laugh and laugh. I liked using the palm pilots. The palm pilots were used to find cars that were reported stolen. Today I checked around 200 cars and not a single one was stolen. We also had to deliver flyers around the neighborhood. It was so hot today and we have to wear a jacket so people know that were from the Collingwood Policing Community.
